Inaccessible Boot Device during installation Windows NT
Inaccessible device can have many causes, e.g . not recognized disk controller, problems with big discs and others.
Typical situation when this problem arise
SCSI Disk Controller -
Use relevant driver for specific SCSI disk controller
New EIDE controller at MB
with VIA chipset - Use driver Service Pack 4 IDE Driver from Microsoft
UDMA/66 disk
controllers - In my case it was motherboard BXMASTER and was necessary use driver for integrated Promise controller
Example solution for MB Bxmaster
Controller
UDMA/66 is used as the SCSI controller and under Windows NT are using similarly
On empty diskette from directory
IDE\Promise (from installation CD disk CD) copying all files
During
installation Windows NT and detecting new device (Setup is inspecting
your computer hardware configuration) press key F6 to specify
mass storage devices
Display
Message "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass
storage devices....." and a possibility
by the help of keys S Specify additional device manually - press key S
Of the given options select
"Other".
Put
in diskette with driver and press keys Enter
Again validate selection (display drivers type - Promise ULTRA66 Controller)
Display drivers type with possibility add some next driver - press keys enter to continue
And
continue in standard installation
Example solution for MB
VIA
On empty diskette copying file atapi.exe with drivers Service pack 4 IDE Driver
Run program atapi.exe (files with drivers will unpacking directly on diskette)
Next procedure is same as in
solution for MB BXMASTER
